It’s been another couple of great weeks for book additions! Received for Review I was really excited about this one, and have already read and loved it. My review will be up this week! Thanks to Orbit for sending this my way! This one sounded like a great (and fun) change of pace. Many thanks to Saga Press and Wunderkind for the review copy! I’ve always really enjoyed the Green Rider series, and the books are typically 5 years apart, so I was happy to see the chance to read more in that world with this novella. Plus, love the artwork! My thanks to DAW books! … I’m behind on this series, but everything I’ve read by Scalzi, I have enjoyed, so I should get on it. Thanks to Tor! This one sounds like an exciting read! Review: City of Lies by Sam Hawke
4 Stars , Reviews / September 10, 2018

City of Lies is an excellent debut and start to the Poison Wars series. The story follows a brother and sister, Jovan and Kalina, as their world turns upside down by the assassinations of the uncle and the Chancellor, who he was trained to protect. Throw in a rebellion, traitors, and a siege, and the pages of this book really start flying by as you can’t help but try to read faster to find out who’s side everyone is on, how they fair, and what Jovan, Kalina, and the new Chancellor, Tain, will be able to pull off to save the city. I immediately connected with Jovan, and was taken by his story of being raised to know poisons as he being trained to take over the role of “proofer” for his Uncle, whose job it was to protect the Chancellor. They are trained to thwart assassination by poison by recognizing it by taste, smell, texture, or any other method available to them. Of course, to train Jovan of this, his uncle started poisoning him at the age of 7. Fun training, right?? A life of being poisoned by your uncle so you can learn first hand about poisons. I…

Friday Firsts: City of Lies by Sam Hawke
Friday Firsts / August 24, 2018

Friday Firsts is a new meme that will run every Friday here on Tenacious Reader. It will feature the first few sentences/paragraph of my current book and my first impressions as well. It’s meant to be a quick and easy way to share a bit about what I am reading, and I would love to hear others join in sharing their current reads as well. Jovan I was seven years old the first time my uncle poisoned me. He served me the toxin in his signature cheese stew. It gave me waves of stomach cramps and hallucinations of every horror my young mind could conjure, but left no lasting damage. I learned that day to trust nothing on my plate or in my cup, not even something prepared by my beloved uncle Etan, my Tashi, the most honored and trusted person in my world. Especially not him. By ten, I could identify the ingredients in most dishes set before me, from the spicy baked fish served year-round in Sjona’s farms and estates, to the flat black bread cooked in clay ovens in every kitchen in the city, to the delicate cheese-and-honey pastries favored in the highest circles of society. I could detect…

Stacking the Shelves / May 6, 2018

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly feature all about sharing your good luck in book acquisitions! So here’s what came my way since my last post! Wow, I went way too long without doing a Stacking the Shelves!! These are all the wonderful additions since last time! Received for Review                                   Both of these books from Harper Voyager look amazing! I’ve wanted to try Feist, and this new series looks like a great chance. And I have started The Poppy War and am so in love with this book so far! So many thanks to Harper Voyager!                               Pyr, as always, was great to me again. I am admittedly a bit horrible about making time to read short fiction but am hoping I get a chance to read some of the stories from the Nebula Awards showcase. And Blood Orbit sounds great! My thanks to Pyr!     I received a couple of interesting looking thrillers from Quercus. One looks to be a fourth in series, so not sure if I…
