Tor #FearlessWomen Blog Tour: VICIOUS by V. E. Schwab – Blackout Poetry and Excerpt
Excerpt , FearlessWomen / May 29, 2018

Today, I’m excited to share another #FearlessWomen title. It’s an excerpt from Vicious by V. E. Schwab, which releases today. This is a reissue of Vicious in anticipation of the publication of the sequel VENGEFUL on September 25, 2018. I read and enjoyed this one quite a bit, check out my full review. With this one, we were also given the option of doing black out poetry. At first I was a little hesitant as I’m not particularly artistic, and also did not want to mark my actual book. But I decided I could take a picture and play with digital “art” (I’m using the term lightly here). It was fun, but coming up with the poetry part was definitely easier for me. So check out an excerpt below, in addition to my first attempt at blackout poetry!   About FearlessWomen (from Tor Books) Women are shining in every genre of speculative fiction, and it is no longer enough to say “Women are here.” Instead, #FearlessWomen everywhere are taking a stand to say “Women will thrive here.” Highlighting major titles from bestselling authors V.E. Review: All Systems Red by Martha Wells
4 Stars , Reviews / May 14, 2018

I don’t read many novellas or short stories, but All Systems Red by Martha Wells is a great example of why I should read more. It’s a fun and exciting story that’s also quick and well paced. Also, while this was my first book by Martha Wells, it certainly won’t be the last. The story features a team of scientists that are on an exploratory mission. And because of this, they are required to have a Company supplied security android, or secUnit for short, along for the ride. In this world, all space missions must be approved by the Company and because profits drive everything, lower bids win. This doesn’t exactly encourage advancement so much as cutting corners. One of the first things I enjoyed about the book is that the main character, the secUnit on this expedition, refers to itself as ‘Murderbot’. Such a silly thing, to enjoy a name, but its not *just* the name, but the entire attitude and disposition behind it. I guess in real life something that calls itself Murderbot might be scary or undesirable to have around, but in a book? Murderbot is awesome. And once you get to know it, at least if…

The Sunday Share – May 13 2018
The Sunday Share / May 13, 2018

The Sunday Share is a new meme I’m going to try out that lets you share links to content you’ve enjoyed (or posted) from the past week. It is similar to what Anya used to do over at  On Starships and Dragonwings. I have looked for other options since that stopped, but unfortunately haven’t found one yet, epecially one with a solid focus on speculative fiction. So I decided to test out running one here on Tenacious Reader. I know we all like to discover new blogs, reviews, discussions, guest posts and especially those giveaways that we may have otherwise missed during the week. So, feel free to share your links, and also they can be your own, but don’t forget if you just found a new blog or read an amazing review, be sure to spread the love and link those as well. And you don’t need to limit to blog posts, there are amazing reviews and posts on Goodreads, Reddit (r/Fantasy), feel free to link those too. Last week and this week I have done the formatting a little different. This week I decided to go with listing the current link up where you can add new links….

Friday Firsts – The Smoke Thieves by Sally Green
Friday Firsts / May 11, 2018

Friday Firsts is a new meme that will run every Friday here on Tenacious Reader. It will feature the first few sentences/paragraph of my current book and my first impressions as well. It’s meant to be a quick and easy way to share a bit about what I am reading, and I would love to hear others join in sharing their current reads as well. TASH NORTHERN PLATEAU, PITORIA “EVERYTHING READY?” “No. This is a figment of your imagination, and I’ve been sitting on my arse all day eating honey.” Tash was adjusting the rope so its knotted end was a hand’s breadth above the bottom of the pit. “A bit lower,” Gravell said. “I’m not blind!” “You need to check it.” Tash turned on Gravell. “I know what I need to do!” Gravell always got serious and pernickety at this stage, and it only now occurred to Tash that it was because he was scared. Tash was scared too, but it didn’t help to think that Gravell wasn’t far off shitting in his pants as well. “Not nervous, are you?” she asked. Gravell muttered, “Why should I be nervous? You’re the one it’ll catch first. By the time it’s done with…

Review: A Veil of Spears by Bradley P. Beaulieu
Reviews / May 10, 2018

A Veil of Spears continues the fantastical excitement I’ve grown to expect from this series, starting immediately from where With Blood Upon the Sand left off. If ever there was an under read, under recommended series, I really think this is it. It has so much to offer and is so well written, I am always surprised I don’t hear it discussed more. Reading this book just reinforced that. The Moonless Host has taken a huge hit, but instead of giving up, Çeda devises a plan to try and deal another blow to the Kings, one that might not require so much manpower. Çeda is squarely in the sites of the kings as a threat, and so she needs to evade them while also continuing to scheme against them. The one thing she has going for her is that the kings no longer all trust each other. Divisions are forming, and if they don’t stand and work together, then taking them down will be, if not yet easy, at least less daunting. The divisions can create opportunities, which Çeda can not afford to not take. Since there are more moving parts, all of which have been set up very well, I felt like…

#FearlessWomen: DEATH DOESN’T BARGAIN by Sherrilyn Kenyon
Excerpt , FearlessWomen / May 8, 2018

Today, I’m excited to share the first feature for #FearlessWomen. It’s an excerpt from Death Does Not Bargain by Sherrilyn Kenyon, which releases today. “Keep a weather eye, Mr. Dupree.  People, even beloved brothers, change. Seldom for the better. Usually toward the worst.” Bane glanced over to his younger sister, who’d come back to him after her own death at the hands of Bane’s enemies. “But I know the pain of losing what you hold dearest, and I won’t be depriving you of your family. Just remember the first rule of betrayal.” That it never comes from the hand of a stranger or enemy. Only the ones you trust can betray you.   Ahh! I actually have not started this series yet, but that bit about betrayal certainly has me interested! About the Book The Deadmen are back… With DEATH DOESN’T BARGAIN, Kenyon again returns to the pirate ship Sea Witch, where Captain Devyl Bane, and his undead crew have set sail for eternity, searching for forgiveness and salvation. Together, they are humanity’s last hope to restore the gates and return the damned to their hell realms. Many demons are beginning to break free of their eternal prison and are bent…
