Review: Iron Gold by Pierce Brown

Anytime I read the first book in a new series that follows one I love as much as Red Rising, I approach with both a huge dose of excitement but also a touch of apprehension that it won’t live up to the previous series. I am so excited that Iron Gold lived up to every expectation I had and maybe even set some new ones for the rest of the series. It has all the traits that Ioved in the Red Rising series, but the current story stays fresh and exciting. Iron Gold is set about 10 years after the last one left off and the peace that Darrow and Mustang worked to achieve is beginning to show signs of serious strain. There is the threat from the Ash Lord, but internally there is also politcal strife as groups try to jockey for power. Darrow is faced with some incredibly hard choices and some of his decisions, quite frankly, just don’t go over well. It is interesting seeing him go from being the favored son of the land, a living superhero of his time, to, well … you’ll have to read to find out, I don’t want to go into…

Share the Love Giveaway Hop
Giveaway / February 6, 2015

I’m excited to be participating in the Share the Love Giveaway Hop, hosted by The Herd Hops this year. The way I see it, this is a great chance to not only share some of my favorite authors with everyone, but also to give away a book of the winner’s choice. When deciding how to pick authors for this list, I really had a hard time. There’s just so many! But then I figure no matter who I feature, I can’t go wrong. I wound up selecting 4 authors that I have discovered within the past year. Some of them are debut authors, some of them are established, but they were new to me recently. Plus one all time favorite because I just couldn’t help myself. So here it is:   The winner will have their choice of eBook, physical book or Audible audiobook for any of the books shown in this giveaway. (US only)     Grady Hendrix What can I say? A horror story set in an IKEA knock-off chain furniture story. Just imagine being not just being in a horror story, but being trapped at work with your coworkers for it! Surrounded by corporate propoganda! This book was so incredibly fun. And while…

Red Rising by Pierce Brown

Red Rising by Pierce Brown. How to write a review for this one? Well, just to start, I will say it was fantastic. This is a fast paced book that is very hard to put down.  It is a story of life, of love, of society, of justice, of evil and of vengeance. It is also dark. Yes, there are similarities, parallels to other books out there, but I did not feel like I was reading the same story or reading it in quite the same way. Hunger Games, Ender’s Game (there is even a reference to Ender’s Game) are the first two books I think people will compare it to. But you can find similarities to even Kingkiller Chronicles, Blood Song and Harry Potter (it’s like a ‘roided out cut throat Hogwarts). But, just because Red Rising may be reminiscent of parts of other novels does not mean that it tells an unoriginal story. It has it’s own story to tell with Darrow in the center. In a universe (because this goes beyond just one world), Darrow is born to the lowest of low of the castes. Castes are so separated here, they you can tell what caste…
