A weekly meme hosted by Bionic Book Worm where we list 5 books for the given topic. We all love lists, right? I love Joe Hill’s horror books, and was actually a bit surprised after I started reading this to find it really wasn’t horror. But it was still fantastic, it was definitely worth the time invested to read it (this book is huge!) Red Rising is one of my favorite series for any genre. This books are so exciting and addictive. If you haven’t checked them out, I highly recommend you do! This is one of the most messed up fictional realities I’ve read. I absolutely loved it! It is also a book that explores some interesting topics and can give the reader a bit to think about. This was another fantastic (and possibly disturbing) read. The future world in this is harsh, and ticks This is a seriously amazing and must read book, no matter what genre you are a fan of. Seriously, just go read it.
Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme by That Artsy Reader Girl. This feature gives a weekly Top Ten list. We all love lists, right? I am modifying this weeks theme a bit because it asked for top 10 books of your favorite genre, but since so much of my blog is devoted to Fantasy, I decided to mix it up and list out 10 of my favorite non-Fantasy books…. of course some of these may be a bit of fantasy as well, but their predominant genre would be something else. And I won’t commit that these are my absolute favorite top 10, because well, I know I will think of books later that I wished I had included. That’s just the way it goes. But these are 10 of my favorite non-fantasy (which means for me they are all either horror or science fiction since I don’t read much else)

This week’s theme is Standalone Books Technically, the suggested theme was Standalone Books that Need a Sequel, but I find that the standalones I am happy with, even if I think I’d enjoy reading more, I don’t think they *need* a sequel. That’s kinda the point. So I’m just listing 10 of my favorite standalones.
American War is one of the most striking and visual books I’ve read in quite a while. It creates an almost palpable atmosphere and setting, and really immerses the reader in this world of war and plague. The writing is just absolutely beautiful, even if the world is not. The premise is America is being ravaged by a second Civil War, triggered by an oil shortage and some southern states refusing to adhere to new regulations designed to curb global warming. At the same time, the population is also being decimated by a plague. We learn about it all through the story of Sarat who is living in a camp for displaced people after her father was killed. Sarat is a very interesting character, she has a strong spirit and is not one to conform easily. She does not necessarily fit in easily, but she finds her own place and purpose and journey makes a great read. I found every page immersive and the world was quite frankly too easy to relate to or envision. This is a book that is a bit of a slow burn, but for those that appreciate a strong setting and a book that makes…
