Waiting on Wednesday – The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal
Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Breaking the Spine to let us share our excitement for books coming out soon.
OK, seriously? A book by Mary Robinette Kowal that features a mathematician as the protagonist??? YES! PLEASE! (did I mention all my free electives in college were math classes? Because that’s the kind of geek I am? And did you notice my binge of a number of the Glamoursit Histories book this past year? So, yes. I need this book.
The Calculating Stars: A Lady Astronaut Novel by Mary Robinette Kowal
Also by this author: Ghost Talkers
Published by Tor Books on July 3rd 2018
A meteor decimates the U.S. government and paves the way for a climate cataclysm that will eventually render the earth inhospitable to humanity. This looming threat calls for a radically accelerated timeline in the earth’s efforts to colonize space, as well as an unprecedented opportunity for a much larger share of humanity to take part.
One of these new entrants in the space race is Elma York, whose experience as a WASP pilot and mathematician earns her a place in the International Aerospace Coalition’s attempts to put man on the moon. But with so many skilled and experienced women pilots and scientists involved with the program, it doesn’t take long before Elma begins to wonder why they can’t go into space, too—aside from some pesky barriers like thousands of years of history and a host of expectations about the proper place of the fairer sex. And yet, Elma’s drive to become the first Lady Astronaut is so strong that even the most dearly held conventions may not stand a chance.

I’m excited about this too! Me and math, not so much, but I never get tired of reading about geeky smart characters?
geeky smart girls are definitely a favorite of mine too!
I think I told you this before, but when I first went to ungraduate, I wanted to become an actuary 🙂
ha ha! That could be fun! But I think I’m pretty happy with programming
I greatly enjoyed Kowal’s “Glamourists” series, so I look forward to sampling her writing in a SF medium…
Thanks for sharing! 🙂
same! They were just such fun, light, enjoyable reads. Hoping this is as well
I like the sound of this one, Lisa – thank you for sharing:)
yay, hope you might get a chance to check it out.
I still haven’t read this author. Drat! Perhaps this could be my starting point – although I still fancy the Glamourist series.
Her stuff is hit or miss for me, but I’m looking forward to giving this one a try!
Ooh awesomeness. I like the premise of this one. Neat cover too.
