Friday Firsts – The Obelisk Gate

FridayFirsts

Friday Firsts is a new meme that will run every Friday here on Tenacious Reader. It will feature the first few sentences/paragraph of my current book and my first impressions as well. It’s meant to be a quick and easy way to share a bit about what I am reading, and I would love to hear others join in sharing their current reads as well.

SPOILER WARNING: I am going to add a warning here, if you have not read The Fifth Season, I wouldn’t recommend reading this quote!

HMM. NO. I’M TELLING THIS WRONG.

After all, a person is herself, and others. Relationships chisel the final shape of one’s being. I am me, and you. Damaya was herself and the family that rejected her and the people of the Fulcrum who chiseled her to a fine point. Syenite was Alabaster and Innon and the people of poor lost Allia and Meov. Now you are Tirimo and the ash-strewn road’s walkers and your dead children… and also the living one who remains. Whom you will get back.

That’s not a spoiler. You are Essun, after all. You know this already.

My First Impressions

Honestly, my first impression is that I am not sure I remember enough from The Fifth Season. And I hate to say it. But the use of second person distracts me. I am guessing listening to the audio version of it might make it worse, I’m not sure. But it bothered me a bit in the first book as well, and I loved the story so much in the end I didn’t care. Fingers crossed that happens again.

What are you reading right now? Did it start out strong? Feel free to share in the comments, and also feel free to link up!
