Audiobook Review: Even White Trash Zombies Get the Blues by Diana Rowland

Angel Crawford is finally starting to get used to life as a brain-eating zombie, but her problems are far from over. Her felony record is coming back to haunt her, more zombie hunters are popping up, and she’s beginning to wonder if her hunky cop-boyfriend is involved with the zombie mafia. Yeah, that’s right—the zombie mafia.Throw in a secret lab and a lot of conspiracy, and Angel’s going to need all of her brainpower—and maybe a brain smoothie as well—in order to get through it without falling apart.

This series continues to be a fun Urban Fantasy. Despite the mention of zombies, I still hold that this is in no way horror. Everything about being a zombie is presented in more of a humorous way rather than a eery, creepy or scary way. Don’t get me wrong, there is some tension and suspense, but nothing I would ever consider reminiscent of a  horror book. Which is perfectly fine, because it is obviously not trying to be that. I just know some readers hear “zombie” and think “horror”. Nope, not the case here.

Angel continues adjusting her life as needed after becoming a zombie. Keeping brain smoothies and rations readily available to keep her body from rotting and falling apart. It also comes in handy for unexpected injuries, because evidently when you’re a zombie, you can never be sure when you might be shot, stabbed or otherwise violently injured. Angel goes through it all with her snarky, sarcastic commentary keeping even the hardest scenes upbeat and amusing. She is also able to kick some serious ass which always brings a smile to face as well.

I enjoyed this one, but did feel I enjoyed it a bit less than the first one. I don’t know if some of that is just do to experiencing the world for the the first time, and also going into the first book with no expectations. That means everything is a surprise. But in this one, I’m already familiar with Angel, I appreciate her humor, but have started to expect it. I also felt like the first book had a simpler plot, (Angel becomes Zombie, Angel must learn to eat brains, Angel really needs to keep her job), where as this one brought in more political and conspiracy plot lines. It was still enjoyable, just a little bit different.

But it was still fun. Angel continues try and keep her life in order and of course, also continues to have major obstacles thrown her way. This time she finds herself tangled in events concerning the zombie mofia. See, what could make zombies more fun? Throw in a mafia dynamic. Yep. Probably need a whole cooler full of brain smoothies to deal with that.

Audiobook Comments: Once again, I love McLemore’s performance of Angel. She brings in the Southern accent at just the right level, and also masters the snark and sarcasm perfectly. Angel is such a personality and the narrator does an amazing job bringing that to life. I plan on continuing the series as audiobooks, maybe I’ll catch up in time for the 5th one that is releasing in October 🙂
