Monthly Musings – January 2017

MonthlyMusingsThis is a where I look back at what I read (or tried to read) during the past month. I also plan on highlighting my experiences in any book club reads I from the month as well. I will always start with any books I would label as a surprise find/under-read books so if anyone missed my reviews for them, and don’t make it to the end of this post, they’ll be easy to find.

Well, January is gone and done and I still haven’t done any of my end of 2016 posts. I may just have to consider those a lost cause and move on. I decided that I need to keep in mind this whole blogging thing is a fun hobby (because it really is), and that I can’t put pressure and stress on myself to keep up all the time. I just needed to take a step back and breathe for a bit and I think that was a good thing.

Review Summary

What I Read

Slow month. I barely finished two of these in time but I did! So they count 🙂 I am hoping to get back on track this month.

Backlist Burndown

I used my Backlist Book to also check off my graphic novel square for r/fantasy Bingo. It has a crew of kick ass mercenary women and was a fun read!

r/fantasy Bingo update

This one runs April – April, so I only have a 2 months left to finish. Seeing as I only have two squares left, should be doable! For Sword & Sorcery I am leaning towards The Spirit Thief by Rachel Aaron (was told it qualifies?  I never would have guessed that, but also haven’t read it). And for Self Published, I am thinking about Senlin Ascends, but may have to switch to one with an audiobook option. Any recommendations?

Looking Forward to

  1. I think with all the looming deadlines and pressures that we inflict on ourselves it’s sometimes easy to forget that this is fun. That’s why I’m trying to keep a couple of months here and there a little lighter. Plus we’ve all been getting over Christmas and New year!

  2. I am definitely looking forward to Six Wakes! And Rat Queens I really want to read too…

I agree it’s easy to stress about blogging and feel the pressure… sometimes we have to remind ourselves it’s supposed to be fun! 🙂

  3. Taking a step back to recharge and feel the fun in blogging again is so necessary, I think. I do it at least twice a year, haha. If you don’t mind overloading on Rachel Aaron, I’d suggest one of her Hearstrikers books on audio. They’re self-published, and they audio versions have actually been nominated for some awards if I’m not mistaken.
